Last month, Fiona Bakas from IGOT – University of Lisbon presented on behalf of FUTOURWORK at ATMC 2025, the 10th edition of the Advances in Tourism Marketing Conference. Taking place in Crete, Greece, the conference ran from 24th to 26th September and was themed around Resilient Futures & Creative Placemaking.
The presentation title was ‘A gender lens to platformisation in tourism and hospitality: Developing a conceptual framework from a worker’s perspective’. It was developed together with fellow FUTOURWORK researchers Tara Duncan (Dalarna University), Joseph Mellors (University of Westminster), and Stanislav Ivanov (Zangador Research Institute).
The paper’s aim was to explore the interplay between digitalisation and gender within tourism and hospitality sharing platforms, focusing on the socio-economic, cultural, and personal transformations experienced by workers. The framework will help us to explore how platformisation affects tourism and hospitality workers’ well-being.
During the presentation, feedback was obtained on the conceptual framework that the team is developing for publication in a special issue.
